Christina

yes, it is a marsupial! it's called a macropod and it's from (where else?) australia. :D the little one must be a baby, cause those guys grow to about the size of a house cat. too cute!

Yup, they're Australian, and I'm pretty sure you can only find them on an island off Western Australia called Rottnest Island - so called because the Dutch who discovered it thought the Quokka's looked like giant rats :D

I'm sooo excited to see an Aussie animal on this site. Being an Aussie myself.... We have lots of cute critters down here. and yes, there are plenty of icky ones too but they are not usually seen, except in zoos or the bush, thankfully.

Woot!!!

Pah, 'seen' quokkas, 'cuddled' quokkas...I live in Perth, Western Australia, mere kilometres from the island of Rottnest, which is the ONLY place in zee world that quokkas can be found. The little fellas are so popular on the island that there is even a pub (or 'bar' for y'all from the US of A) called The Quokka Arms.

Finally! Zee unique animal heritage of Australia is recognised as being tewtelly redonk!!!

P.S. Did I mention that this one time, when I was 8 I FED a quokka some watermelon? (altho' I think this is kind of banned now due to being a protected species....)

Aussie, Aussie, Assie, Oy, Oy, Oy.

*ahem*. Sorry ;D

I got the joke - but I was too late - I'm a big AB fan too, going to one of his FOA restaurants this weekend for my birfday.

I had heard of a Quokka too, Mr. Attenborough had told me about them long ago.

I've never held a quokka, but I've seen heaps whilst walking around Rottnest. However there is an unfortunate term used to describe the abuse of these animals (called 'Quokka Soccer') by ignorant and horrible people who sometimes visit the island. Also, if you ever visit Rottnest, watch out for the peacocks, they're thieving little buggers (personal experience) :P

Speaking of Aussie cuteness, Meg should really get some fairy penguins up here. When I was in Oz years ago, we went to Phillip Island and was almost killed by the cuteness of adorable, 8-inch tall penguins.

I knew about quokkas from a highly scientific *pome*! Yes, a real poem in a real scientific journal. Behold the wonder that is "Hiawatha's Lipid" (pdf link on the right side of this page http://www.springerlink.com/content/n3362j124494j675/ )

Notice the tiny paw action, and tentative little face.
One can almost hear him say,
"Please, Sir, may I have some more?"

There's just something about marsupials... they always have the nicest-looking fur, like stuffed animal fur. This guy is a cutie!

Courtney
 |  Oct 01, 2007 at 10:41 AM

I got all excited cuz I thought it was a wombat, my personal fave marsupial... had no idea there was another I had not even dreamed of, much less imagined! Kinda skinny legs for a wombat anyway I guess, and wombats have a koala nose. Thanks for the Educational submishe!

 |  Oct 01, 2007 at 12:45 PM

To Theresa, above-- yep, they've got tails. Long, skinny furry ones. Rather sweet but a little disproportionate.

Google Image Search 'quokka' and you'll get all manner of interesting and cute pics.

I've lived in Australia all my life, and I'd never even heard of a quokka until I moved to Western Austalia two years ago. I can see their 'lil island from my house. I went to visit them and there was much squealing, they are amazingly brave.

Also, Western Australians' are weird. They call cockatiels "wieros".

 |  Oct 02, 2007 at 02:43 AM

Ah, good ol' Oz to the rescue again! The animals there are just amazing, and most are not found anywhere else in the world!

I've never heard of this little feller! He looks like a tiny kangaroo! Squeee!

I wonder if any quokkas are quonscientious objectors?
More to the point... oh heck, you know where I'm going with this.
Here, have some Quick Oats.

Theo

And I've never heard someone call a Cockatiel a wiero.
You strange person.
