The elusive, bamboo-leecking red Panda

Sender-inner "Hideous Lump" says it's a CRIME that we haven't posted more red Pandas.

For once, Hideous Lump is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. So here we go.

The fat furry tail..the fat furry tail....kronsche!

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:07 AM

Guessing that Flat Panda lives in a hot zoo. My sister's floofy cat used to assume that posture on hot days with belleh smooshed into the (relatively) cool floor.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:11 AM

If only all the world's Navies would use the Red Panda Torpedo instead of those nasty explosive ones! It would be a much more civilized world. Just imagine...
"Captain, incoming at 4 o'clock!"
"Yes Chief, let it come. We are running low on snorgles today."
"Aye aye, Captain."
"All Hands, snorgling will commence at 0700 hours."

I don't know where he is, or whose he is, but if I asked REALLY, REALLY nicely, do you think I could have him?

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:17 AM

Awwww....I've loved these guys since spotting them at the Bronx Zoo as a kid.

They're highly endangered though. :(

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:31 AM

Oh, and just in case any of you guys hadn't heart - this one's an escape artist:

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:31 AM

Wait, what?

Leave it to the Japanese. I want one too.

Okay, shuttin' up now. :)

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:34 AM

*Dies* I'm ded. DED, you hear?! And it's the best way I've ever died. Mmmm, panda tongue overdose. This is probably the first time I've actually tried to snorgle through the screen. I've threatened to before, but that leetle tongue. Ooooh. *Dies and is ded again*

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:35 AM

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 12:37 AM

BTW, Christina, why did you have to post that video! I would have been happier thinking pandas couldn't have any hoomon contact, which is why I haven't snorgled/kidnapped one yet. Damn that girl! Anyone know what the premise of that show is and how one gets to live with TWO RED PANDAS!!? Whew. I need to lay down. More.

The Japanese girl with the red pandas was posted a while back on this site, and I have bookmarked it ever since! Red pandas are my fave. Too bad their natural numbers are really low. There's teh red panda project if ne1 is interested in contributing: www.redpandaproject.org

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 01:52 AM

A common schoolyard song in Japan (the tune of which can be heard in the arcade game Ponpoko and a variation of which is sung in the Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko [in which we see "A Tanuki using its enlarged scrotum to fight off a police officer"] makes explicit reference to the tanuki's anatomy:

Tan Tan Tanuki no kintama wa,
Kaze mo nai no ni,
Bura bura

(Roughly translated, this means "Tan-tan-tanuki's testicles, there isn't even any wind but still go swing-swing-swing".[1] It then proceeds to continue for several verses, with many regional variations. It is sung to the melody of an American Baptist hymn called Shall We Gather At The River?.[2])

Panda torpedo!!! LOL

Too much cuteness at the same time.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 02:15 AM

I have always considered red pandas to have among the highest Cute Quotients(Q-teQ) of all animals, but these pictures are above and beyond!

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 03:56 AM

While I absolutely adore cats above all creatures, the red panda pics have put into a cuteoverload-induced coma.

I am printing these out to take to work so when I suffer the slings and arrows of the insanity at work I will have a reason to smile. Thanks! ;o)

There are red pandas in the central park zoo...I just may have to go for a leetle veesit. Metz - we should meet up! Maybe one of these weekends....

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 05:53 AM

I think that the red panda is possibly the cutest of all the animals in the entire world! And kittens. What's cuter than red pandas and kittens?

I try to get to the Bronx Zoo once a year when they have the baby festivities. I got to see a baby red panda last year, I just wanted to snorgle the living snot right outta him! :-)

Yes, my name is really Cricket
 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 05:53 AM

DKN, I tewtally forgot about the red pandas in Central Park! I know what I'm doing next weekend! (Not this weekend, I'm reading Harry Potter).

Speaking of the Central Park Zoo... have you been to the penguin exhibit there? They have a gay couple that get all depressed that they never have an egg. They finally felt bad and gave them one, they were all happy! Next time you go, ask them about it! :-)

*[ever-so-gently] tosses red panda into da washing machine with mild detergent*

*pulls red panda out of washing machine, gives a firm shake and [ever-so-gently] puts heem into da dryer on fluff cycle*

*pulls out pocket-sized red panda puff, kisses da bejeezuz out of his cute widdle facey-face and puts heem in mah pocket where he is forever loveled and huggled*

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:03 AM

Yeah!! Cricket, I've visited Wendel and Cass the gay penguins (though couldn't tell which ones they were, of course). An interesting thing happened to them! When the penguin population started to dwindle, they both went straight and mated with females! I don't know if they stayed with them just that once and went back to being gay penguins or what. I wouldn't be surprised if they did go back to the gay thing because they were together for SO LONG! Like 9 years or something. And I always thought it was funny that the zoo keepers swore up and down that Wendel and Cass had the cleanest nest! :)

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:03 AM

I visited the red panda in the Bronx Zoo this past Christmas...

even hubby said awww....

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:03 AM

Dozo yoroshiku, Panda San.

As for gay penguins going straight to save the species...aren't the machinations of nature amazing?

Anthropologists have long posited that there are distinct benefits to herd or group species for a certain portion of them to be gay, because those animals tend to contribute to the wellbeing of the GROUP rather than to their own offspring. (Think of your favorite gay aunt or uncle, or you know, if you're the favorite gay aunt or uncle, give yourself a pat on the back. And then take those nieces and nephews to da Bronx Zoo to see some red pandas!)

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:17 AM

Hells yeah, RedZ. I've always had a working theory in my head that homosexuality is an evolutionary trait based in population control and quality control, too, as in having extra nurturing hands around.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:23 AM

I love the torpedo picture! He's all flat with his little legs sticking out perpendicular! It's so cute! *hugs panda*

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 06:33 AM

Red pandas are one of my FAVORITE animals at the zoo! They are so freakin' cute. They look like little red cat/racoons! They are so fluffy and chubby and just look fun to cuddle ;)

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 07:14 AM

So this is why they keep telling me to Get Firefox. I want to download and install this cute panda.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 07:24 AM

Y'know, someone needs to cross-breed these things with Fennecs.

They'd conquer the world with cuteness.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 07:36 AM

Luv the lump-on-a-porch-look.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 07:53 AM

A couple years ago I visited the Milwaukee Zoo in Wisconsin, they had a red panda (which is one of my favorite animals eeeevvver, and if I could have them as pets I tewtally would), but this one's tail had been cut off! I'm not sure why, but I was so sad. They use their tails as pillows when they sleep, and to keep them warm... and Milwaukee is cold! Oh, such a cruel world we live in.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 07:56 AM

Awwww, that's so cute! The torpedo panda looks just like a baby seal (well, except for the colour... and the big tail... and the feet).

Cricket, I'd never heard about the gay penguins. I'll have to check out the Central Park Zoo the next time I'm in NYC!

Yay, red pandas. I've watched these guys for hours, all the while wanting to just hug them to pieces. Snorgglumph!

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 09:06 AM

That is the cutest! If someone fired a panda torpedo at me, I would surrender. I assume that upon impact, copious amounts of leeking and snorgling would commence.

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 09:14 AM

Agreed... there needs to be more of these guys posted. And more Fennec foxes too!

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 09:34 AM

I think I've found my daemon!

 |  Jul 20, 2007 at 09:51 AM

Trivia: Did you know the first Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru (who gave the Independence Day address at midnight on August 15, 1947) had a pet Red Panda?
