The little tootsies are no bigger than a strand of Hair. And the teeny tiny antenae so fine you can not see them.

I admit. I had to look to see the cute. But I swear, that caterpillar has a little head tilt attitude going on there! Now, that's cute!

These boots are made for walking

Annie
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 01:50 PM

You can see the tiny eye ball and those antennae/tail whiskers are longer than he!!!!

I never knew there was such a small caterpillar. I only know of the furry colorful ones all over the trees in the spring.

ratchic
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 01:56 PM

Ew, that is a bug, I think a silverfish/centipede, and they are NOT cute! I prefer fur, but even feathers and scales in small amounts, but not bugs! (Sorry I had to vent!)

lrm
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 02:12 PM

It's only cute because it's so small.

the other Brenda
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 02:30 PM

It's sad, actually. The caterpillar's children can only go to school one at a time during winter, cause they only have 1 full set of shoes. In summer, each one does have flip-flops!!!

Gail (the first one)
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 02:41 PM

Okay, that's adorable.

Brie
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 02:44 PM

'tis a wee fuzzy cat-r-pillar . . .how is that not ka-yute? It isn't a silverfish, and centipedes are scaly and fuzzless.

What type of myth/flutterby this will become, I wonder.

Jiffknee
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 02:51 PM

Yeah...that looks like a tiny house centipede to me, not a caterpillar. They are the most creepiest, disgusting bugs I've ever had in my house (at least at the sizes I've seen them grow to). EW. I can just feel them crawling on me now! Bugs are pretty much NEVER cute to me, except that one "Carnivale" mantis thing from a while back. :)

Leetle werm!!

If it were any bigger I would be completely disgusted.

 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 03:14 PM

Now usually those things disgust me (I squashed one last night), but the "deedle-dee" sound effect makes this one OK :)

Fegli
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 03:52 PM

It's definitely not a silverfish, and it does look a little centipede-y. Where's Bug Man to give us the skinny?

warrior rabbit
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 03:52 PM

(balances glasses on end of nose and looks over them)

Ahem. That is certainly a larval Lepidoptera, or, as the unwashed heathen call it, a caterpillar.

And, if you *must* know, caterpillars only have six true legs, like all insects. The rear "legs" are not in fact legs at all, but mere extensions of the body wall. They arise from a *completely* different developmental pathway from true legs, and--

(vanishes in a hail of pedant-seeking tomatoes)

the bug man
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 04:20 PM

(emerges from tomato pile)

Oh, and--

(deep breath)

SQUEEEE!! So cuuuuuuuuuute!

the bug man
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 04:20 PM

Okay people, that is a centipede, and there is NOTHING cute about centipedes.

If you want to know how to tell the difference between a centipede and a caterpillar, look at the body and the tail. Caterpillar bodies are fat and fuzzy. Centipede bodies are thin and hairy. Also, look at the tail. A centipede (like the one pictured) has little feelers coming out of it's tail. A caterpillar does not.

Vanessa
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 05:03 PM

You're describing no centipede I've ever heard of, Vanessa.

Theo
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 05:34 PM

Alo, would you like to come in for a spot of Tea?

Mary
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 05:39 PM

I've found the boots! *waves in air* here, let me put them on. *squishes* oopsies...

Theo, if you don't believe me, look at this Wikipedia link:

Vanessa
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 06:16 PM

It does look a bit like a house centipede. They are creepy, but they're pretty harmless and can prey on insects you really don't want in your home, like roaches.

Jen

it's a FUZZY caterpillar, vanessa.

oni
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 07:06 PM

Sorry Vanessa that is not the same as what is pictured here..though definately similar in look.
But I am thinking maybe the common tent caterpillar
see more here.

Any other guesses

I'm with Vanessa. Definitely a small house centipede. I've seen enough of them to know. ::Shiver::

gato
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 07:13 PM

Eww. That's a baby house centipede.

It may be a baby, but it's made of 100% pure evil.

 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 07:40 PM

Oh to live on Finger Mountain,
with the barkers and the tiny balloons...
You can't have twenty (legs) on Finger Mountain,
though you're think you'll be crawlin' away too soon, crawlin' way too soon...

SoCalSis
 |  Dec 02, 2008 at 07:56 PM

@ the bug man: thank you

Look at da widdle cattypiwwar! I just want to scoogie heem!

P.S. correct me if i'm wrong, but don't centipedes have legs on their sides, not under them? That would make this guy a not-centipede.
