My first cat Gus had long toe-fur, and he liked to be up high, so of course one day he fell down. Broke a bone in his hand. The vet put a cast on him. Gus got the cast off before he was even ready to go home. So the vet put another one on him. Gus got that one off too, within a half hour. Finally he came home with a cast up around the bend of his elbow, well into his armpit. Didn't get that cast off, but he kept trying, wore away the fur at the top of the cast, so we had to put an Elizabethan collar on him, poor love. Actually the cats DO slip and slide everywhere. :p It's kind of funny actually, because I have one very athletic cat, and the other with the toehawks will sometimes try to imitate the other, but without much success, because of how little traction he gets with the toehawks.: chanpon; | Dec 29, 2008 at 07:11 PM

Our Dot has long toe fur. We call it her "tufts of fluff." She was a stray, so we don't know her lineage for sure but our vet said she's probably at least half Maine coon. I have a Maine Coon and she totally has the toe 'hawks! I see no need to trim them, but I totally indulge in nomming them from time to time, and she lets me! This is my first comment ever ever on any site. But I had to break my silence to to say that we call those "speed tufts" on our Persian and Himalayan (because it makes them look like they're going fast). And we were very upset when the groomer trimmed them off once. It took a long time for them to grow back, and we're so glad they did.
