I've been waiting for the GD bus all day

I can't believe they raised bus fare to one squirmy wallaby.

Used to be one hamster round trip.

I don't even wanna know how this photo got taken

Flavia A., I suggest you unicycle to work.

OK now there's a story I'd like to see more of - seriously!

What kind of monkeeeee is that? Is it an ape?

That's quite a picture!

I DO want to know how that photo got taken!

It looks like the wallaby is its purse. Too cute. We definitely need the story to this one!

Okay, what?

Babs
 |  May 16, 2008 at 05:41 AM

Ermine_V.: looks like some sort of gibbon (small ape).

I don't think they normally use wallabies as currency, though.

Jim
 |  May 16, 2008 at 05:45 AM

This picture is the start of a joke.

"An ape with a wallabi under its arm is waiting for the bus, when the bus pulls up and the driver says ..."

The cap-shon ees geeeenious. On what planet is this, BTW?

Poohbear

Is this even real? I'll second the above comment:
"I've never hallucinated, but that's pretty much what I'd expect to see if I did!"

I not awake enough to come up with a Gibbon when I first posted. Now, I'm still not sure I'm awake enough to grasp this!

 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:06 AM

That's so not fair!!! I rode this bus this a.m. and all I had was a stupid paper ticket to pay with... Where do I have to go to be able to pay with a squirmy Wallabi????

StormCat
 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:09 AM

Gibbon went out the night before on a blind date, and woke up with a wallaby in his arms, and now they're both late for work. Go figure!

Funky gibbon!!

Theresa
 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:17 AM

This is one of the best caption/pic combos ever. I know people who ARE that ape, being old and crotchety and saying things like "GD".

Jen
 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:32 AM

You didn't tell me you were bringing your wallaby?! I didn't bring my wallaby! You always do that - you say you won't bring your wallaby and then you bring your wallaby. Now, I'm wallaby-less and you... with a wallaby. Forget it, I'm going home.

Angela
 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:32 AM

Did anyone else think the monkeh looks exactly like those old stuffed monkeys with the velcro on their hands & feet? Or a muppet...seriously, the wallaby looks real enough...but I've never seen a Gibbon with arms & legs that long....
WTF?! In a good way!!

MandaBain
 |  May 16, 2008 at 06:33 AM

Gibbon: "Have you met my baby wallaby? Do you want to pet him? Are you overloading with teh cute yet? Oh, bus is here."

chanpon

That's right ThreeCatNight, if this waiting for the bus ain't part of a walk of shame, I don't what is.

Does anyone know what the type of wood is that the bench is made of?? It is gorgeous and I would love to have some.

I think Mr. Gibbon is taking the pet wallaby either to the vet or the wallaby park to play.

Since the wallaby is so well behaved, it is not required to be in a pet carrier to ride the bus.

Or MAYBE it's a Service Wallaby.

Gibbon thoughts, wallaby thoughts, gibbon thoughts, wallaby thoughts, wouldn't you just love to know what they both are thinking? Yes, that surely is beautiful wood. Where in the world did Carmen SanDiego take this picture?

Yep. Some of the best comments evah! It surely stands for Gosh Darn unless this is, as someone said, an OLD gibbon. My grandmother was such a lady. Spoke with a broad A (not a reference to her posterior), but when she was 97 and the shelter puppies came to the "home", when her turn holding the puppy was over and they handed it to the next old lady, my grandmother looked at her and said, You give me back my GD (not "gosh darn") puppy!" Gosh Darn!

[I was thinking maybe "Great Dane" or... well, let's just say I'm a creative smartass - Ed.]

If anyone is interested it's a Lar Gibbon, you can tell from its white hands.

Jack Hynes

I think what gets me it that the Gibbon is like why are you staring at me, this is totally normal!

Tiffany
 |  May 16, 2008 at 08:36 AM

I hear no one yelling "'Shopped" and yet, how can this be real? Did the gibbon just say, "Hey, I think I'll wait here for a minute with my pet Wallaby..."?

I've done all sorts of searches and nothing.

I'm going back to my Magic Bus theory...since that song is still running through my head. Way to give myself an earworm...

Why are there people taking offense at GD?? Uptight much? If that offends you, you're in the wrong place.

If you're curious about the wood, and have more time to look for wood

http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/

there you go.

Ermine_Violin
 |  May 16, 2008 at 10:04 AM

1. I don't see anyone "taking offense" at GD. I just see a couple bemused comments.

2. Why is taking the high road always considered "uptight"?

3. Where are the nuffs complaining about the gibbon having an unusual pet? Is it okay to domesticate wild animals if you're gibbon?

4. I'm kidding.

5. So don't get yer undies in a bunch.

AuntieMame
 |  May 16, 2008 at 10:04 AM

Ah heck, I emailed the man myself to ask for a wood ID - I'd like to know myself, but am too busy today to search 1000's of wood pictures on his site.

I'll post more later if he answers me.

Ermine_Violin

I strongly object to Gibbons taking on pets of any kind, especially a poor Wallaby, who must have a helluva time swinging from tree to tree...

Kris
 |  May 16, 2008 at 10:10 AM

Bartender: Wall I'll be!
Gibbon: No, actually its a Kangaroo.

catablob
 |  May 16, 2008 at 10:25 AM

It must be a hearing-ear Wallaby- notice the large ears on afore-mentioned Wallaby and the seeming lack of ears on the not-yet mentioned Gibbon.

Thanks for the wood 'fix' Ermine Violin, I got up to the "D's" before I had to stop-I'll keep looking. Trufulla trees, indeed, Niiiiice! They don't look real, do they?

IT: What did you do?

Me: I thought it was so funny I did a spit take...and it shorted out my keyboard...
IT: I hate you.

You know, it's the funniest thing. This heat wave has fried my brain. I went to Cute Overload and there was this picture of a kitten, but I was so overcome by heat that for some reason I saw this crazy picture of a gibbon and a wallaby. It was too weird.

Eek! The most inspiring post in weeks and I'm at work and don't have time to process all of the genius comments and come up with one of my own! Although I will say that to me, "GD" means "Grateful Dead" and pyrit singing "The Monkey and the Engineer" (which the Dead played 37 times in concert) made my day!

But the story here needs to be explored further. I'm gonna have to sleep on this one.

Guys, did you know there is a "Hamster Huey" Controversy? Yes, after the Calvin and Hobbes references to a fictional story that Calvin's Dad read to him ("I wonder if they will ever find Hamster Huey's head?"), someone wrote a book with that title, and tried to sell it on Amazon?
See:

Good GRIEF people....lacquered carrot benches, wallaby chocolate poos, gibbon varicose veins??? Yes, that most definitely WAS a "special" brownie I had at lunch. Anybody else hear the theme music to the Twilight Zone?

Nope, just "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin.
Can't say I'm pleased about it, either.

...you know, I could rip on Bobby McFerrin from day till night because of that song I just mentioned, and the whole "Simple Pleasures" album from whence it sprung... but then I happen to watch something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgvJg7D6Qck

Seriously, it starts out as a total joke. Yeah [SNORT] right, sure, the audience is going to sing the Gounod melody while you're tootling away with the Bach part, ha ha. Just make with the sound effects, ya washed-up beat-box '80s-era half-wit... except, um, then he actually starts doing the Bach pipe-organ tootles, and by golly the audience *does* the Gounod "Ave Maria" part. It's like he's leading an orchestra. How the HELL he ever got THAT to work... well, maybe the concert was recorded at freakin' Juilliard, because that sure as heck was never some HBO comedy crowd. Oy vey indeed.

Um, yeah. Tangent. But what the heck, we've got gibbons with wallabys!

What great fun reading thru all the comments! :) This little guy and his friend are so cute I want to stick 'em in my pocket and take 'em home. Wouldn't mind having the groovy bench either!

Wow... It's like The Wonderful World of Richard Scarry. I can't wait to see the other animals on the bus. Srsly, what'll happen next? Is Lowly the Worm the bus driver?

ZOMG ppls, the Truffula tree, carrotwood (Is it from Brobdingnag or the land of the Giants in Jack and the magic beans? Umm, my brain is now zooming into the Bugs Bunny version of Jack and the magic beans.), hobbithouseinc... What curious Wonderland Story Time Warp is this?

Thees thread ees great.

I was assuming that the wonderful wooden bench was painted - beautifully, artfully painted. Seriously, does any tree from this planet come those colors on the inside?

You remember paint - it's what they used before photoshop.

And Theo, thanks for the Bobby McFerrin Bach. It's gorgeous! (Although I'm sure there was a trained chorus somewhere in the backround there... still gorgeous... )

Thanks, Theo - that video really WAS awesome! (not as awesome as a GD gibbon with a GD wallaby, but that IS a tough act to follow...)

Raemie L-- Where's Goldbug? In the Pickle Car?

Thanks, Theo-- I was singing along!! That WAS awesome. I'm a classical soprano, and McFerrin has the best intonation of any singer in any style.

BTW, it took my a while to warm up to DWBH but I kind of like it, now.

ZZ Top's "waitin' for the bus all day" is the song i've been singin' in my head all day after seeing this post :)

also love the shout out to the monkey song, which is also quoted in another popular earworm:

...the line broke, the monkey got choked,
odabottenbeedabotten (sp?)
red, red wiiiiii-iiine
stay close to meeee-yaeee-eeee

Make sure you got the right
way to pay...this bus driver don't take no wallaby-wannabes...
Thanks a lot,TURBOFLOOF, for beating me to the "tough act" comment...you talk better, anyway. I've been howling out loud with all these comments--no CO at the library or I'll be asked to leave--or maybe they'll just throw me out!

@Theresa: Wow, classical soprano!

It is really interesting to me how many of us 'comment'ers' are creative/artistic! Birds of a feather....

Here the bus fare used to be 1 baby langur monkey, but now they've made it TWO BABY ELEPHANTS. How am I supposed to be lugging around two frisky half-tonne baby elephants? On a BUS?! Don't be complaining to me about no squirmy wallabies! I hate inflation and these differences in currency values!

Theo - thank you for the Bobby McFerrin link. I sent it to my choir director who I found out had actually gone to BMcF's concert at the Meyerhoff a few years ago. He said he was amazed at how many people knew the Gounod and how gorgeous it was.

I guess it makes sense; I mean, the folks who would go to see him in concert are by and large the same sort of folks who, you know, SING.

Also, it always amazes me how dropping the slightest reference in a place like this can bring folks out of the woodwork. I bet if I say "Ten Tenors", at least ten Cute Overload peeps will *immediately* swoon.

Like classically-trained dominoes, you are.
