Why would a cat try to stay awake? Isn't sleeping their job?

Jennifer
 |  May 12, 2008 at 05:34 AM

Perfect day to crawl back in bed with a kitten.

I don't know what made me happier - the sleepy kitty or the use of Largo! Aural and visual state of bliss...

Heather
 |  May 12, 2008 at 06:39 AM

Agreed. It was definitely the paw tuck. Oh. My. Gawd.

That was me and my kits last night! Star Wars was on starting at 11 pm last night and I'm such a Star Wars geek that I stayed up to watch, with my furbabies on the couch with me. Around 12:30 they were pestering me to go to bed already and I kept shaking myself awake, trying SO HARD to make it through even though I had to be up at 6 am.

Schweet little tabby bebe!

 |  May 12, 2008 at 06:57 AM

he's learning

next time he won't fight it

pretty soon he'll recognize the signs of impending somnambulance and seek out his favorite sofa spot well before he gets tie-tie

that music might be his clue

Ohhhh... so familiar - got my hubby fed and coffee'd this morning at 5am and tried sooooooooo hard to watch some silly History Channel thing with him but I kept doing exactly what this kitteh was doing until I passed out in the lazyboy!

Poor bebeh kitteh. Too tired to lay down. Life is hard.

I should know better than to watch this kind of thing during work hours!

Space Cowgirl
 |  May 12, 2008 at 07:42 AM

@ Jennifer - LOL

Perhaps the kitty is trying to stay awake because it's his(her?) day off. We all know sleeping is a cat's job, so I reason that on a cat's day off something other than sleeping must be done.

I love the back leg toe-stretch! And the jaunty straight-out back leg... that kitty's up for some *serious* relaxin'.

ElleFinn
 |  May 12, 2008 at 08:03 AM

How did this kittch know how I was feeling. I am totally having trouble staying awake on this rainy Monday.

The paw tuck is the best.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

How could you video this without having to pounce the kitteh? It's unbeaaarable.

Fegli
 |  May 12, 2008 at 08:32 AM

Ooops, mispelled kitteh...told you I was seepy!

Noelle
 |  May 12, 2008 at 08:32 AM

I wonder what kind of kitty this is...did anyone else notice the eye-spots on the back of the ears? Maybe it's a toyger, cuz it doesn't quite look like a baby tiger...

Amanda
 |  May 12, 2008 at 08:35 AM

OMG I have that sofa! Mine didn't come with a sleepy bebeh kitteh tho. :(

 |  May 12, 2008 at 09:44 AM

Awww, I so know that feeling!

It's basically:

Wha? Huh? No, I am totally paying attention. I can see that you are here..z..z..zz..zzzzzzzz, wait, no, I just have to stretch to get this ou......z...z...zz...zzzz, oh, dang it, I might as well just get back to sleep (and hope that my professor wont notice).

Next time I have trouble falling asleep I'll skip the warm milk and go straight to watching this little guy. It's like visual Ambien.

The back foot stretch - someone here, on CO, calls that a "toe burst."

I think that's about the funniest thing I've ever read. Who wrote about "Toe Bursts?" It's so funny, it still makes me giggle!

TurboFloof

I mean back "toe" stretch...

There are people like that on the 8:00 am bus. Bleary-eyed zombies nodding off. Sometimes there are people with their eyelids clamped shut with their mouths agape with a snore just itching to explode out.

I'm a teacher and I was watching this on my laptop just before my Year 12 English class. Some girls arrived early, heard the music, and clustered around to SQUEE.

After he stretched,it looked like he bowed his head to pray before lying completely down. So strange how watching a sleepy cat/kitten makes you feel so peaceful.

Night Queen
 |  May 12, 2008 at 06:36 PM

You can almost see the waves of gravity the sofa is emitting when the kitty is trying to stay upright. I could feel my own head getting heavier and heavier as I watched!

Emily
 |  May 12, 2008 at 06:54 PM

The stretch, eet ees good. But the paw curlage just after the final slump, eet ees better.

 |  May 12, 2008 at 06:55 PM

Wow, that paw tuck was like a very expensive dessert after a very decadent meal, and then learning that the whole meal is comped.
