I covered the naming ceremony as a student journalist. :) Her name is Riley, and she's a cutie pie.

Ha! Like most babies, his first coordinated acts include playing with his hands, touching and licking everything in sight, and snuggling up to mom for a nap!

Tres mignon, bien sur. (very cute, of course). The joey has packed on the pounds, for sure. Good thing he's taking furtive "escapes" from da powche. Poor ma!

Wow, and we used to make fun of my mom for carrying so much around in her purse... at least we weren't trying to crawl into it! These guys are adorable, but who knew that kangas had such creepy "hands"?

the joey looks strangely like a cross between a bat and a dog....very cute with a tinge of the creepy.

Am I the the only one who got that same feeling when watching this joey as I do when I see 4 and 5 year olds being pushed around in strollers by their parents? You're huge! You can walk! Dang it, give mom a break! But his grooming himself was totally adorabuhls.

I think kangaroos look more like a cross between a llama and a fox. Something about their whole mouth & nose region reminds me of a llama. This joey is incredibly cute though. I love the hop-hop-hop action!

I've actually never watched roos in action....those legs are redonk. I'm also trying to imagine the Aussie creature with a Brooklyn accent.

"Yo, g'day. I trow anudder shrimp on da barbie."

(Yes, I know I am conflating two broad regional stereotypes and that some Aussies hate shrimp and not all Brooklynites talk like Babarino.).

I have never seen a roo crawl in and out of the pouch, that's totally amazing how it expands to fit him in there!

I like how he was all OMG I HAVE HANDS!!

Sproingy sproingy sproingy!

Adorable!

...Although it does kinda weird me out watching the "joette" hop back into the pouch. Looks uncomferbuls.

Goodnayss! My, by aren't kangaroos oddly shaped creatures. How funny it looks when they are on all fours, you almost find them cute-but-sad 'cause they're so strangely constructed. But then BOING! Wow, lookit 'im go!
No longer sad. Just uber awesome.

She's adorable with that hop. Man, little roos are cute.

More on that naming ceremony in case anyone's curious - http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/28/a-zoo-jumps-for-joy-over-the-life-of-riley/

Well, since Leetle Joey apparently leeck leeck leecks every-teeng that crosses his path, I... gots to run and get leecked. Zoo's just a hop, skip, and a jump away, you should excuse the pun.

Go Brooklyn!

Roos lick their forearms to lower the surface temperature, to keep themselves cool. David Attenborough taught me that! :D

I wants a cosy pouch to wriggle into.

This gives new meaning to the word muzzle-powche.

It's so weird seeing 'roos with decidious trees & traffic in the background.

I'm from Victoria (Southern Australia) and my parents' place has swarms of western greys everywhere... some of my best childhood mornings were spent watching the GIGANTIC males box in the mist.

If you ever get the chance to visit Aus., check out http://www.zoo.org.au/HealesvilleSanctuary , they do great native animal rehab! Plus you can adopt a 'roo! :)
