There are two things in the world worth struggling for: freedom, and animal cookies.

 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:18 AM

I dunno if the hammie's dizzy, but I sure am! Notice that he reversed directions at one point. When I was a kid, we did that, supposedly to counteract the dizzyness from spinning around in one direction too long. Didn't seem to work in hammie's case -- sent him right over on his little back! (Boy, those paws were a scramblin' trying to get back upright).

I think even the cookies were dizzy by the end of that!

I laughed so loud and hard I just about burst my gut looking at this hilarious and very Qte video! I go ga-ga over cookies, too! Too moische! If I were there I'd give him the entire bag of animal cookies, and then some of my other cookies as well. Heck, he is so darn Qte, he can have ALL my cookies! Don'tcha worry, though. I can always go to the store and get more later on.

I'm giggling madly at my computer now...I love when the little guy drags the treasure off to the other room!

Jaye
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:24 AM

I am so glad I didn't see this at work--I'd have been at my desk, hand clamped to mouth, emitting high-pitched animal noises.

I'm glad I wasn't taking the video, either--I'd have been laughing so hard it would have been jumpier than the Homicide: Life on the Street vomitcam.

No waiting for the payoff on this video: instant ham-larity!

Noel
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:39 AM

Aaaa! I know the music from childhood and it's driving me nuts. Somebody please tell me that it's either (a)Night on Bald Mountain (b)the Dinosaur movement from Carnival of the animals, or (c) something by Grieg. sorry to be a dork, but's really bothering me.

oh and the hammy is DIVINE!

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:41 AM

I am at work, and I'm sitting at my desk trying not to giggle out loud (suppressing that much laughter is actually kind of painful).

He didn't look like he really *needed* the cookies--his chubby little buns and haunches kept cracking me up.

heidilynn
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:42 AM

OMG! hammie on his back, cookie still in his mouth, and all his little footies swinging helplessly in the air. Too much!

Ray
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:43 AM

First I stared it completely hypnotised - until the poor thing fell on his back. Those teeny tiny feet whipping the air - too much. I shall never recover.

QUEET following me! I must eet zee cookies in peace!

Pheas
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:49 AM

The fact that it's "Dance Macabre" made me laugh along with the cute.

leprechaun
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:49 AM

Anner - It's definitely not night on bald mountain, and I don't think it's Grieg. You might be right about Carnival of the Animals, but I don't think it's the fossil movement.

h3
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:50 AM

OK, crisis averted. It's the "Fossils" movement from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens. We should really hear more of this piece on this site...if for no other reason than that there's a movement called "Wild Asses."

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:51 AM

OMG I'm watching this again and again and squeeing like an idiot.

Somebody help meeeeee.

Subhangi
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:52 AM

Oh, ok, maybe it is the fossil movement - Wikipedia says Saint-Saëns quoted the Danse Macabre in Fossils.

h3
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:52 AM

lebrechaun -OMG! You're right. I'm wrong. Still Saint-Saens, right? I am a totally failed product of consevatory training. But proudly fulfilling the stereotype of non-studious singer.

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:53 AM

h3 - aha. that explains why i actually listened to a clip of the Fossil mvt. and was still wrong...

I like how it's a waltz and the hammy is going around in circles. He looks like a wind-up toy!

anner

 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:55 AM

when he tips over...are those "hammiloons?"

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:55 AM

The music for this was certainly perfect. Too cute. Reminds me of all our family's past hamsters.

Mindy Thornton
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:56 AM

Anner - the song is "Danse Macabre" composed by Camille Saint-Saëns and though while not from "Carnival of Animals," Saint-Saëns also composed it as well.

(according to Wikipedia, the Dinosaur movement and Danse Macabre employ similar xylophone motifs, so that may be why is sounds familiar)

Not sure if you're a Buffy fan, but you may remember it from one of their episodes (at least, that's where *I* remembered it from).

As for the hammy, I think my brain just as'ploded.

chicklet
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:57 AM

OMG the music i think totally makes this most hilarious.

Rae
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:57 AM

D'oh! I was too late! :(

Note to self: don't be so wordy next time.

chicklet
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:59 AM

Yes, we do need a part two where hammie gets his cookie!! Just too cute....

Sissy
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 08:59 AM

Thanks, Chicklet. There are a number of ominous-sounding programatic symphonic pieces that I always seem to confuse; at least now I know why I'm confusing those two.

I don't remember the Buffy episode, but then I watched all 7 seasons last year within the span of a couple months, so it's probably crammed into my brain somewhere.

Isn't it great how small animals don't seem at all daunted by trying to carry things many times their size? And how hamster and corgi butts look kind of similar?

anner

jenn
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:04 AM

Did anyone besides me notice that little hammie made a beeline (kind of) straight to the LIQUOR cabinet?! I think this must be where he started from before he got the cookies!!

doodlebug
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:05 AM

All of the music in "Carnival of the Animals" is snippets of longer pieces by different composers simply played at a different tempo. CotA is a wonderful introduction to the orchestra piece, and the best version has Hugh Downs doing the narration. Because there's nothing like Hugh Downs saying "a tasty kangaroo merangue".
http://tinyurl.com/2zzmm6
(Not to mention the cover art is absolutely wonderful. I made my mother save the cardboard album cover long after the record had given all it could.)

I thought he was a wind up toy at first.Talk about determined, give the poor little bugger a cookie

The Honourable Gladys Anstruther
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:06 AM

Great video, but I hope they got the cookies out for him--not just because he really *deserves* a cookie after all that, but also because plastic bags are dangerous to pets. If he ingests bits, it can block his intestinal track, and of course there is also the suffocation risk.

But the video is truly adorable.

Lesley
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:10 AM

ljlucy - jeez, i never new that. i'm learn-ding! my dad had a recording with Sir Noel Coward. it was on reel-to-reel! when he sold his collection several years ago, that was the one think i asked him put it on cassette first.

chicklet - no problem. repetition aids the learn-ding.

If there is not already a Motion Picture Academy Award category this video can win, one should be created immediately.

Seriously.

Zombie
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:22 AM

DKN - It's from "Hush." It's the piece Giles plays when he's explaining who The Gentlemen are and how they work.

Anner - Thanks :) (and Hush is from season 4, the college season, in case that triggers something from the depths)

chicklet
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:22 AM

DKN - found it on Wiki-P. it's "Hush", episode 10, season 4, during the hilarious scene in the lecture hall when Giles is trying to explain who the "gentlemen" are, but nobody's able to talk. he uses it to accompany his presentation.

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:24 AM

The Buffy episode with this song was the one when they couldnt talk. They are at the school and Giles is talking to them about the monsters on overhead projector. This is when the song is playing.

I was at work, and I did laugh hysterically, and my boss was there, not 10 feet away. And at that moment he was talking to an important partner, ABOUT ME.

I almost made it without publicly humiliating myself, but when hammie fell over and had to carry away his loot to the other room, that did me in.

mleiv
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 09:56 AM

I luv that even when he's all dizzy and flipped over on his back, he STILL won't let go of the cookies!

He's looking for a dark quiet place to stash and then devour them, but the large pink animal keeps following him....

Is it mean that I want to put cookies in a bag and see if my hammie will do that too?

Alida, Anner, Chicklet -

Thanks! Now I don't have to wonder all day until I get home to listen to it. That is SUCH a brilliant episode. I think if I have my Buffy facts straight, that was the only one that was ever nominated for an Emmy.

i think "hush" was my favorite episode. it was like a short film. but the musical was pretty incredible. i loved Tara singing to Willow in her LARPER dress. and of course...

"Bunnies, bunnies, it must be BUNEE-EE-EES!"

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 10:41 AM

hmm. i guess that's "LARPer".

anner
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 10:42 AM

Anner -

"...or maybe midgets".

I met Emma Caufield (Anya) at some horror convention (I only went to see her). She is teeninecy! - even in high heeled boots. I could of folded her up and put her in my pocket.

And yes Tara rocks in that episode!

DKN

I can totally see my beagle doing that if he were a hamster (and even if he weren't). Plus, gotta love the Danse Macabre soundtrack.

JuliaJellicoe
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 11:12 AM

Anner, yes, those ominous symphonic pieces? Totally interchangeable. I went to see, um, Justin Timberlake at a club in D.C. last summer (seriously, he's cool now, it's ok) and the music when they played when he was coming out was the theme from "In the Hall of the Mountain King." And I was all excited, because I was going through a Grieg phase. Then the next day the Washington Post music guy identified it as Peter and the Wolf. Uh-uh, my friend! Uh-uh!

DKN - My second favourite part of OMWF! My first being Spike, of course:

But since I'm only dead to you
I'm sayin' stay awaaaaaaay
And let me rest in peace

Theo, just for you:

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said "you can't do that to my people"
He said "you can't crush them under your heel"
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne.

OMG,OMG - other firefly FANS! *hugs*

I bought the box-set - made my family watch it, yup, I can die now knowing I made the world a better place. ;)

My Degus who are about 10x the size of these wee hammies do the stop 'n spin move on the wheel all the time. Often sycronized. It's pretty cool but I'm not sure I'd ever be able to capture it on camera. These shot kick-BUM! ;)

wolfwhocriedboy
 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 01:12 PM

h3 - how funny! i notice all these pieces also tend to be things that are aimed at children one way or another. i grew up hearing Peter and the Wolf, Night on Bald Mountain, Danse Macabre, Peer Gynt, and Carnival of the Animals, and they've all mushed together, sometimes to be joined my the last movement of Berioz's Symphonie Fantastique (which I didn't hear until college).

maybe the combo of studying opera and growing up on MTV has me addicted to lyrics as signposts.

and yes, timberlake is much cooler now, sans britney and weird curly hairdo.

Theo

1) Love the hamster and his daring daylight heist
2) Love Buffy and Hush too.
3) That music is also used as the theme from British TV show Jonathan Creek, about the behind-the-scenes magic expert who solved mysteries.
4) And also occasionally co-starred Anthony Stewart Head (aka Giles).

That is all.

Now that is determination! I love those little flaying feet when she tips over! Like a little windup toy that flips over. So funny.

Hey everyone, glad you like the hammie video I submitted. Thanks Kate for the message! I found the link to this on Facebook and I couldn't stop watching it ... it made my day too!

SO funny and cute-I LOVE the music and am always deeply impressed by the speed with which these things are identified! That might be bad grammer.

All day I have longed to comment, but work computer was too pokey.

I cast this as an opera because of the high drama and the repetitive quality of most opera arias. In Italian, of course, with English in supertitles:

Hammie: I have the cookies! I have the cookies! Mine mine mine! Glorious, glorious cookies!

Mom: Please let me help you.

Hammie: I do not need your help. Mine all mine!

Mom: If only you would let me open the bag...

Hammie: [flopping and kicking] No no no no no no no! Mine mine mine! Glorious cookies all mine! Oh, where can I run? Where can I flee? I must flee from those who would steal my cookies!

Mom: I only want to help you. I would never steal your cookies.

Hammie: Treasonous harlot. I run from your diabolical machinations. Mine mine mine! Oh, where can I hide? I must flee with my cookies! No no no! Hideous trap! There is nowhere to run!!! Aaaaaaaah!

That's it. I've made my decision about what to buy with my annual bonus check. I'm going to get a videocamera. With three ferrets, four cats and a dog, I've got to get something that's CO-worthy. Seeing this cinematic masterpiece cinched it. As others have said, the music was a perfect choice.

 |  Mar 08, 2007 at 04:11 PM

Wow, I almost had a heart attack! The title didn't make sense, but I saw a YouTube with a "Stephanie F" at the bottom, and thought it was the YouTube I sent in since I'm a Stephanie F! I just couldn't figure out what a two-legged dog had to do with cookies. *sigh* Maybe soon. Maybe not. Mine was more sad than cute, I suppose.

Anyhow, this is just too prosh. He was determined to get those cookies!

Redzilla,

I wish I could hear the singers singing your words opera-style in English.

It would be hilarious! LOL!

By the way, if hammie were in my house, he'd get CERTIFIED ORGANIC cookies. He'd be a certified organic hammie.

Yum yum yum yum yum!

Noel

He's TOO funny but from the "waddle" I'd say he probably has had enough cookies.

Not that I'm one to talk.

Recurring nightmareish situation. Kinda like when you are running away from a monster in your dreams and you can't seem to get anywhere.

AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!
Ohhhhhh, the poor darling little hammie with his (her?) cookies. (*MY!* cookies! *MINE!!* MINEMINEMINEMINEMINE! )

And OOOOHHHH!!!! the mean terrible - WICKED - plastic bag separating him/her from the cookies. How cruel!! Poor little precious punkin'!!

But .... the combination of hammie and Saint-Saens almost tossed me off my chair. It's really fortunate that I stopped this vid at work just a few seconds after it started. Just once in a while, I try to display some semblance of grown-up-ness. ... But not really that often, so it prolly wouldn't have been a BIG problem.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

YAY COOKIES!!!

And I love how the human was clearly gauging the exact point at which not helping became more evil than funny. Reaching in like "Not... yet... wait for it... now!"

Have any of the other Buffy fans hear Anthony Stewart Head's album? It is so, so, so bad. Love the man, love his voice, but the writing, oh my god. "Cheap Wine Lies." Seriously. Although it's cute how he has Amber Benson and James Marsters guest on it.

Redzilla mah dear, THAT was easily one of the FUNNIEST things I've read in a LONG time. Cudos, I almost peed myself.

I'm now seeing this total hammy-opra in my head. Just the vision of a hamster with a horned hat and a gold bra is enough to send me into laugh-induced coma. ;)

The latest Hamster Ballet: The Hamster And the Cookies.

I could see hammie as a ballerina, especially at the part where he/she spins and spins and spins around and around and around. Now he/she just needs a little ballerina outfit and cute little ballet shoes on those little feetsees, and he/she is good to go.

Noel (Hammie should be a ballerina)
 |  Mar 09, 2007 at 07:12 AM

elizabells--I haven't heard that yet, but I also looove his voice. When I saw a video of Anthony Stewart Head as Dr. Frankenfurter (hose, heels, the *works*) I almost died laughing.

I had to wait until I got home from work too--holy crap!! That is one determined little fella. When he fell over, all I could hear was "ehn! ehn! ehn!"

Too funny.

Hey again everyone!
Hammie is a girl ... her name is Gom Soon and she's about 6 months old. Owner Ed D. says he will do a follow-up video. Can't wait!

 |  Mar 09, 2007 at 02:27 PM

xD I laughed out loud at this!

(And I really want to know what piece is the background music!? It sounds like something that Camille Saint-Saens wrote, almost.)

Christine
 |  Mar 09, 2007 at 03:28 PM

OK, in response to my own comment...
It IS Saint-Saens, looking at these other comments... I knew I recognized the xylophone part. xD

Christine

OMG. The whirling and twirling. The little scurrying (upside down) feets. The "I ain't nevah lettin go of mah cookees" determination. Too, too moiche. *shakes head* And then - is it just me, or was the first cupboard she went to the Pantry??? (or should that be Hamtry...) And now thanks to Redzilla (and others) not only am I imagining the hampster with the little horned hat, leather skirt and metal bra, but I am imagining a whole cast of little hammy opera characters..... I can see them now.....

Late to the party here.

Redzilla - Your opera! Wonnnderful! Wow. That was really good.

When I watch the vid I definitely hear Flight of the Bumble Bee by Korsakov. Alternately, I also hear Around the World by Daft Punk.

 |  Mar 10, 2007 at 04:06 PM

OMG that is a funny video.

I'll bet the hamster knows the bag is going to be taken away. Gnawing through plastic is bad for hamsters. So are sweet snacks. But that hammy's still giving it one hell of a try.

Teresa Nielsen Hayden
 |  Mar 11, 2007 at 10:45 AM

The hamster needs to stop running around in circles, or she'll end up tossing her cookies.

...tiny print footnote: Three movements of "Carnival of the Animals" use quotes, the rest are originals...

Kip W
 |  Mar 11, 2007 at 12:29 PM

Yeah, I pretty much do that when I get cookies too.

Brak_Silverbone
 |  Mar 11, 2007 at 03:42 PM

I died. I *died*. Then I came back to life to watch it again and died again. The best part is where the hamster flips over and all his feet are waving in the air, and he could right himself if he just let go of the cookies--but he never does.

Did he get the cookies in the end?

Issendai
 |  Mar 11, 2007 at 04:41 PM

ZOMG! i've watched thees like 7 times! *wiggles grubby little mouse feet in the air* CUUUUUTE

There's something about the shot of a hammie's backside that's hysterical! This was a true work of art - I laughed so hard my side hurt.

and, Browncoats - Simon does mention having a hamster named after him. I think it was in the much sung Jayne's Town episode.

How's THAT for tying together supposedly unrelated items?
