tiny tiny hippo

OMG. This little Hipster is slippy-slidin' all over the place, you can totally see it. He even has 'chub." I think he has some umbilical cord action going on too. Rock on, little muddy earflaps.

Rock

on.

I have never seen a baby hippo before!

He looks a lot like a baby water buffalo

I'm very glad that the second picture contains an umbilical cord. I choose to believe that. So cute.

He's also rocking Rule #21 -- eye capsules!!!

Even though he's slimey, he's cute.

littlelizard
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 11:57 AM

I've got chub, too--does that make me cute? This bebeh weighs less than I do, I'm sure, and that's just a depressing thought (even if it is a bebeh and will outweigh me many times over in a matter of months).

ShelleyTambo
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 11:58 AM

Um, I don't think that's really an umbilical cord! But let's believe it is, anyway.
Pretty darn cute for a future leviathan.

chacha
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:01 PM

Oh, the wrinkly neck! The eye capsules! The pink spots!
I can't take it.

zeldapie
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:03 PM

Chacha, I think that *is* an umbilical cord because the penis would be farther back in between the legs... nature shields the "sensitive bits" better. Besides, penises are really vascular and they almost always appear pink(er). I doubt it would look so grey and have a chewed off end.

have any of you heard of owen and mzee? stranded tsunmai hippo who befriended the tortoise?

its pygmy so the mommy there is much bigger than a collie. and babeh should be about 9 inches long I'd guess.

Lula
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:10 PM

Upon closer examination I have come to this conclusions.
In the first pic he's all "I'm cold and wet and slimy, and it isn't fun"
In the second pic he's saying "I'm getting out of this water, it's nasty"
And in the third pic he's like "Mom, don't you know it's icky in here?"

Luvs the tineh hippo-po. Makes you wanna say, can't we all just get along? If we can all love and get excited about the mini mud-horse in all his chubsness, can't we be nice to each other too? I'm imagining all the babeh aminals singing "We are the world..." in little chipmunk voices...

too bad hippos can KILL you!

ali
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:39 PM

In response to ebee, we are incapable of being nice to each other because not everyone looks like an adorable baby animal. We also see others as threats which this little guy clearly isn't...Acutally he is kind of a threat, one to my mental capabilities because my brain might cease to function with all this cuteness.

Emily Anonymous
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:41 PM

Geez i'ts like in every single picture you have people telling you how vicious that animal is...
Oh cute koala, but no, it will CLAW YOUR EYES OUT. Oh what an adorable tiger cub, but...they will BITE YOUR ARM OFF. *Sighs* Lets just enjoy the cute, as deadly as it may be??

Baby hippo looks so wobbly hehe, it's like he's going to fall on his side any moment!

 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:47 PM

I've just recently been to Tanzania, where we'd spend hours watching hippos happily wallowing and playing (yep, they can get pretty playful) in their muddy ponds. We didn't see any really little babies, but we did see some getting made ;)

Renee

Any possibility that is a trick of the light? Looks to me like it could be a pink hippo dingaling, and the rest is a leaf on the ground in the background that LOOKS like it is attached. Maybe? Possible?

Char
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 12:52 PM

If this sweet teeny wobbly hippster isn't proof that the world IS good, nothin' is -- and yes, let's work to get along and clean up the world for HIM, if not for anything else.... I am lovingk thees bebeh. (And he's not even a cat)

lezlee - Where'd you go, oh there y'ar way up there.
I don't know if 'Potsie is poopin' in pic #2, but pic #1 looks like, "Mum, Mum, I gotta pee." and Mum said, "Just go in the water."

pyrit
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:14 PM

Why is everyone so obsessed with that being a penis? Why can't it just be an umbelical cord?

AliceTanzer
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:17 PM

I'm pretty sure it is the cord. Otherwise, baby hippos are incredibly well endowed. (comparing body to alleged pee pee ratio).

Regardless, he is TOTALLY prosh and I love his mom, who's all "Uhm, I just gave BIRTH to you, what more do you want?"

jenn
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:20 PM

Reminds me of one of my favorite Christmas songs -

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
Don't want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I don't think Santa Claus will mind, do you?
He won't have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door,
that's the easy thing to do

I can see me now on Christmas morning,
creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise
when I open up my eyes
to see a hippo hero standing there

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses
I only like hippopotamuses
And hippopotamuses like me too

Mom says the hippo would eat me up, but then
Teacher says a hippo is a vegeterian

There's lots of room for him in our two-car garage
I'd feed him there and wash him there and give him his massage

I can see me now on Christmas morning,
creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise
when I open up my eyes
to see a hippo hero standing there

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles or rhinoceroseses
I only like hippopotamuseses
And hippopotamuses like me too!

paula
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:25 PM

I think Char might have something. It could just be a leaf on the ground that's sticking up and LOOKS like it's attached.

blackcatgirl

It's nice to think that maybe these two played 'Hungry Hungry Hippo' together.

Aubrey
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:29 PM

Reminds me of two things:
1. "It's not a tumor!" Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop.

2.
"Mud! Mud! Glorious mud!
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood!
So follow me follow
Down to the hollow
And there we will wallow
In glorious mud!"

So, I agree that the bit in front of his hind legs is the cord, but the bit behind his hind legs and right in front of Mom's nose could be baby's first doodie. In fact, I have a very similar photo of my own cat as a tiny kitten producing a lovely specimen on my bedroom rug in the very same pose as our little friend here (don't ask how, it was just a "lucky" shot). Both photos are still cute, whatever it may be!

lezlee
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:42 PM

I don't think that's a cord, I think it's his (cough) wee-wee.

Susan
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 01:42 PM

What is it about this site? I actually went off and Googled "hippopotamus anatomy" to try and find a definitive answer to the "cord or ?" question.

(BTW, this guy's ears are too, too much!)

I was just sittin here, feelin all sorry for myself, 'cause I got a stupid head cold and I feel clogged up. Then I clicked over here and there was a baby hippo and I felt all better and kind of fuzzy, although that might be the drugs I'm taking. But the hippoooooooooo, he is so tiny and trembly and his little neck is so pink and clean.

Is it umbilical or penicle?

Or maybe Aubrey has a pun.

pyrit
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 02:38 PM

That is MOST DEFINATELY an umbilical cord. Looks just like a human baby's umbilical cord. AND I bet that the bit on the ground is the umbililcal cord as well. Mom just didn't chew it off as close to the belly button as we humans cut off our newborn's umbilicals. The umbilical cord on a human baby is very long too (prior to cutting of course).

ScribblerRN
 |  Jan 05, 2007 at 02:39 PM

Okay folks! I consulted with my large-animal vet hubby. He's worked with many a hippo, including many bebehs.

Umbilical cord? Yes. Absolutely. No question.

Pee Pee? No. (In fact it was a rather emphatic NO, with a look like I might be crazy.)

Poop? No. He thought what you all were referring to was actually part of his back leg. The little splash might have indicated a poo, but he didn't see one in the photo.

Hope that helps. Also, love the little skin turtleneck bebeh's wearing. So cute to be so fashion forward so young.

paula! I just got back from Christmas with my siblings (we're all in our 40s) and as we do every year, sang that song with our kids at top volume. Couldn't help myself - I sat here and sang through the whole thing again. Knowing my luck, that silly tune will haunt me the rest of the day, but thanks anyway for the smile.

i know it is only my opinion, I don't mean to start a riot, but in my view although somewhat intriguing, maybe even cute-esque...i don't know the whole slimy thing and something about his mug in general...i don't know it disturbs me. it maybe makes me smirk a little but ... no i don't think it's quite cute. it could, paradoxically, appear cute if it were on ugly overload. what can I say, it's friday and I'm making no sense. at any rate I am glad everyone else likes it (when they aren't debating anatomy, and thank you Sandy for the official statement!). of course i have never believed in the eye capsules rule, so that may be the hitch. chub, on the other hand, i endorse wholeheartedly.

He's got ...

Yoshi cheeks. Yes.

That cute little expression Yoshi always wears is definitely in play here.

Well, I hate to break the news, people, but that is undeniably a hippo "wee-wee." I live on a very unusual farm, and I have been the mid-wife to a variety of very unusual animals. Yes, that is where his "thing" would be; it is not too far up on his tummy. If it was an umbilical cord, it would not have the protruding belly flesh near the top, it would be much thinner, shorter, and shrivled up by this point. On the other topic, I can't tell what exactly the thing in the back is, but I think it is simply a very cute baby pygmy hipo tail.

Oh, and SO CUTE IS THE BABY PYGMY HIPO.

I want a hippo too! The mom is so dead tired and the babe so frisky. This really made me "Awwwww".

for pygmy hippo enthusiasts:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmy_hippo

I for one am very disappointed now that I've read this -- I saw a pygmy hippo at the Prague zoo housed in what looked suspiciously like a bathtub. For years now I have fantasized about having a bath-tub sized hippo in my home, and walking him on a leash. Now I find they actually weigh 400 pounds. I can barely handle my 60 lb dog on a leash, what am I going to do with a 400 lb hippo?
